Discover the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden
Welcome to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses, Mauritius. Renowned as the most beautiful garden in the Indian Ocean, it offers an enchanting blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Renamed in 1988 to honor the beloved father of the nation, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the garden houses his memorial or 'Samadhi.'
A Brief History
Originally established nearly 300 years ago by the French Governor of Mauritius as a private garden, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden has since evolved into the National Garden, sprawling over endless acres of land.
A Paradise for Nature Lovers
The garden is a haven for nature enthusiasts, boasting an incredible variety of tropical plants and herbs. With 85 different varieties of palm trees from around the world, including the Royal Palm, Raffia Palm, and Bottle Palm, the garden is a treasure trove of botanical wonders. Notably, the Talipot Palm, also known as Corypha Umbraculifera, stands tall at up to 25 meters and blooms only once in its lifetime, producing the largest inflorescence in the plant kingdom.
Rich Plant Diversity
Home to around 500 plant species, the SSR Botanical Garden features a diverse collection of trees, shrubs, perennials, climbers, and bulbs. This includes both native and exotic species, with some flowering in summer and others in winter. Recent phenological observations have shown changes in the blooming patterns of various species due to climate change. For example, Brownea grandiceps now blooms earlier each year.
Animal Corner
In addition to its botanical treasures, the garden features an animal corner with deer, tortoises, and several bird species, including parrots and ducks. The ponds are teeming with aquatic life such as turtles, fishes, eels, and giant water lilies. During the day, you might spot Mauritius's only endemic mammal, the bat, hanging from the trees.
Historical Landmarks
- Château de Mon Plaisir: This replica of an early sugar mill, built in 1953 by the Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture, features vertical cylinders drawn by oxen. The current structure, erected in the 19th century by the English, is protected as a National Monument.
- Majestic Entrance Gates: The grand entrance gates, which won first prize at the International Exhibition at London's Crystal Palace in 1862, add a touch of historical grandeur to the garden.
Famous Tree Planters
The garden also holds trees planted by renowned personalities and celebrities, including Nelson Mandela, Indira Gandhi, François Mitterrand, and Princess Margaret.
